NDT Technician – FPI
Conducts NDT and FPI inspections on cast and machined components, independently interpreting results to approved procedures. Performs part washing, chemical etching, and accurate identification, while maintaining inspection equipment and completing all required documentation. Ensures compliance with customer, quality, and industry standards prior to release, supporting product integrity and on‑time shipment.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
- Perform and process components in line with applicable NDT inspection Method and Specifications.
- Inspect, interpret, and assess indications and discontinuities against relevant quality standards and documentation.
- Complete and confirm required system capability and daily checks in accordance with NDT procedures.
- Set up, adjust, and operate inspection equipment as required.
- Accurately record and maintain NDT inspection results and documentation.
- Work closely with Engineering and Technical teams to ensure Data Cards and inspection records remain accurate.
- Interface with QA and support root cause and corrective actions identified through the audit process including other tasks identified through business improvements.
Interpretation & Analysis
- Analyse and interpret NDT results accurately, determining the acceptability of materials, welds, or products based on standards, codes, and customer specifications.
- Identify any flaws, defects, or inconsistencies in materials.
- Work closely with engineers and Quality team to escalate and resolve critical findings.
Document & Reporting
- Record and document all NDT inspection results, ensuring detailed and accurate reports are submitted to the quality control team and other relevant stakeholders.
- Maintain proper records of NDT procedures, equipment calibrations, and test results in line with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Provide clear communication of findings, including writing reports and discussing results with engineers, production staff, or customers.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety
- Ensure that all NDT equipment is well-maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition, following manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Perform regular inspections and basic troubleshooting on NDT equipment to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines related to the use of NDT equipment, handling of materials, and workplace safety.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all inspections comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., ASNT, ASTM, ISO) and customer requirements.
- Adhere to company quality assurance policies, testing protocols, and safety standards to maintain high levels of inspection integrity.
- Participate in internal audits, supporting the continuous improvement of NDT practices and quality control processes.
- Any other duties deemed suitable by your line manager and as reasonably required by the business.
EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in Mathematics, English, and Science.
- Typically, 2–5 years’ experience working in an engineering or NDT role within manufacturing, aerospace, oil & gas, or a related industry.
- Completion of an apprenticeship, HND, or BSc in Engineering or a related discipline is highly desirable.
- EN4179 / NAS 410 Penetrant Testing Level II certification is advantageous but not mandatory, as training and progression will be supported for the right candidate.
SKILLS:
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, standards, and engineering documents.
- Solid understanding of NDT techniques and their applications in detecting defects or inconsistencies in materials.
- Knowledge of quality standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., ASME, AWS, ISO).
